What is Passionfruit?
Passionfruit is a tropical fruit from the Passiflora vine, a passion flower found in clustered regions across South America. However, it’s now grown and harvested in coastal places where they can enjoy full sun.
As for its physical appearance, this fruit is small, egg-shaped, enclosed in a tough outer shell. Its colors range from yellow to dark purple. A notable aspect of this fruit is its juicy center, dotted with tiny, black seeds.
Passionfruit possesses a distinct sweet and tart flavor. It’s often used as a main ingredient in desserts, particularly sorbets, tarts, and jams.

4 Creative Variations of This Recipe
While passionfruit gives the kombucha a complex and enjoyable flavor, the beauty of kombucha brewing is that you can mix and match your ingredients however you’d like. Try one of the following:
- Mango slices. Add 1/4 cup of mango slices to make a mango passionfruit kombucha.
- Rosemary or cilantro. Add 2 sprigs of either rosemary or cilantro with the passionfruit.
- Grapefruit juice: Mix half a cup of grapefruit juice with the newly fermented passionfruit kombucha before serving.
- Maple syrup: Pour half a tablespoon of maple syrup into each bottle of newly fermented passionfruit kombucha before serving.
Should You Make This Recipe with Young, Sweet Kombucha or Older, Sour Kombucha?
I recommend using sweet kombucha for this recipe. Passionfruit has a slightly tart flavor, and using a sour kombucha can be a bit overkill. Balancing the flavors out with a subtly sweet kombucha base is ideal. However, it’s up to you. If you like your kombucha extra tart, feel free to use an older, more sour batch.
